Stone and Shingle Cottage Lincoln, MA

This new home was constructed in 2004 on a private lot with pastoral views of open meadows, shady woodlands and the Sudbury River. The stone and shingle structure provides a beautiful backdrop for fieldstone walls, bluestone terraces and a massive wooden deck off the back of the house. A chipseal parking court bordered by ample cobble bands sits in perfect proportion to the house. A fieldstone wall completes the feeling of enclosure within the court and contains a simple lawn punctuated by four 'Snowdrift' Crabapples. The front walk is constructed of granite sets with a bluestone band surrounding a reclaimed dark granite millstone. Another millstone, found on the site, was used as a step at the small bluestone terrace off the kitchen. This space provides a quiet, intimate sitting area in contrast to the large deck which is perfect for parties with its outdoor fireplace. Woodland groundcovers and bulbs soften the edges the shady driveway, while the sunny backyard is perfect for a large perennial border full of peonies, ornamental grasses and colorful flowers for cutting. A series of stone walls and a grass ramp bring the client's four boys from the deck down to their play area. Future plans for a vegetable garden surrounded by a stone wall and fence are underway for the area adjacent to the existing barn.
