A renovation/addition to an old barn created a multi-function building; the original section of the barn still houses farm equipment while the stable wing and addition were turned into a home office, guest quarters and function room. The landscaping was kept quite minimal in keeping with the simplicity of the structure. The simple lawn is broken by several bands of weathered granite paving. A stone farm wall closes in the courtyard on the fourth side and provides a subtle separation from the apple orchard beyond. An antique horse trough and custom concrete urn provide the only ornamentation in this simple space.
A fieldstone walk through the orchard takes one past the greenhouse and cutting garden to the main house. The greenhouse was purchased as a kit and customized with a stone veneer foundation. Recycled brick was used to create the walk around the cutting garden. 'Grosso' lavender provides stunning color and fragrance throughout the summer. Peonies, roses and an assortment of perennials and bulbs provide ample blooms for cutting and bringing inside. The garden is punctuated by a purple wisteria vine trained as a tree. The hobby greenhouse provides a welcome respite during the winter with plenty of room for overwintering tender plants and starting seeds.
